Iyobinte Pusthakam Movie Review

Iyobinte Pustakam is a Malayalam period thriller film on the life of a navy man on land. Directed, filmed and co-produced by Amal Neerad. The hero Fahad Fazil is his co producer. It is written by Gopan Chithambaram and Shyam Pushkaran.

Martha( Isha Sharvani ) is the childhood friend of Aloshy ( Fahad Fazil ) who are separated when Aloshy run away from home after the death of his mother Annamma ( Reenu Mathews ).

Aloshy’s family Iyob( Lal), Ivan, Dimitri (Chemban Vinod) is not where he belongs. And this none belongingness to authority brought him back to western ghats- a home which he always wanted to leave.

Movie is less visibly political yet like most of Malayalam films of this genre show an affinity towards left! That’s ok you know even Christopher Nolan does the same brilliantly.

Martha is the child of a British planter and Kazhali (Lena) who is considered as a witch by natives. But Martha is the reason why Aloshy returnes to Munnar.

But unexpected events make him once again enemy of his family. And the entry of Angoor Rawther(Jayasurya) the timber merchant make the relation more complex not only in the family but also for the whole of people living around.

And Iyobinte Pusthakam is written (typed) neither by Iyob nor by Aloshy, but one of his old comrades.

Raheal (Padmapriya) the daughter in law of Iyob play a very female character of the family. And she has something more than what meets the eyes.

Iyobinte Pusthakam is a thriller which will not make you bored. And at times will excite you with some punch dialogues and background score.

Like any other Amal Neerad film this one is also very strong in technical side. Camera work is perfect and filmed the beauty of locations (we can ignore excessive colouring).

Music by Neha S. Nair and Yakzan Gary Pereira was suitable for the movie. But I was not able to understand the lyrics except of the song “Raave…” :p.

Editing by Praveen Prabhakar was good as well as art direction by Sabu Mohan, which was obviously a difficult task. Sound effects by Tapas Nayak are unavoidable for the success of this movie. Sameera Sanish did another wonderful job with costumes.

Director could have moderated the slow motion sequences and smoke and mist in some frames. Performances by Fahad and Lal are exceptional yet ladies don’t have much to do except for Padmapriya in this fully macho movie.

You will love the dialogues for example : ” Travellers like Aloshy who have seen the world and are tolerant will change the world one day”
