Pauly was born in a Nasrani family in Ernakulam, Kerala. He graduated with a B.Tech. in Information Technology from Federal Institute of Science And Technology, Kochi in 2006.He was employed in Infosys, Bangalore and quit because he lost interest in it.

Nivin applied for a role in Malarvaadi Arts Club, but was not originally on the shortlist of 12 actors chosen for the film. However, when one dropped out, he was given a second chance to audition, and got his debut role in cinema.

Since, he has had roles in films such as The Metro and Sevenes, brief appearances in Traffic and Spanish Masala, and what The Hindu called “a hugely popular” music video titled Nenjodu Cherthu from the album Yuvah, which became a hit on YouTube. His film Thattathin Marayathu was 2012`s biggest hit. After Thattathin Marayathu he was called “the current youth sensation” and “hot property”. He received offers from directors including Sathyan Anthikad, Rajesh Pillai, Aashiq Abu and Shyamaprasad.

Nivin made his debut in Tamil cinema with the film Neram. His other Malayalam films in 2013 included Anju Sundarikal and Sunil Ibrahim’s Arikil Oraal. In 2014, his first movie to get released was fashion photographer Abrid Shine’s directorial debut, 1983, followed by Jude Anthany Joseph’s Ohm Shanthi Oshaana and Bangalore Days, directed by Anjali Menon.

Nivin bats with perfect timing
While they were working at the Infosys, Jude Anthany Joseph used to joke to his friend Nivin Pauly that one day he would direct him in a film. A few years later, that joke turned into reality in the form of Om Shanthi Oshaana, which also turned out be one of the biggest hits in Malayalam cinema last year.

That film had released a week after 1983, which had also hit the bull’s eye at the box office; and it featured a career-best performance from Nivin, as a cricket-crazy young man in a village. "He worked really hard on his role," says Abrid Shine, the director of 1983. "He got even the subtlest of things as a cricketer right."

Nivin also stole the thunder as a rural lad migrating to a metropolis in Bangalore Days, which remains one of the biggest money-spinners in the history of Malayalam films. He was brilliant in his comic scenes in it.

“Nivin did great a job in Bangalore Days and I called up him to say as much,” says Anoop Menon, who himself won the State Award for the best character actor (1983 and Vikramadithyan). “I told him that only Mohanlal could have done what he did.”

1983 and Bangalore Days would remain special films in Nivin’s career, as his performances in them fetched him the State Award for the best actor, which he shared with Sudev Nair (My Life Partner). “I am not surprised by Nivin’s growth as an actor, because he is willing to learn all the time,” says Jude, beaming, as Om Shanthi Oshaana won the award for the best popular film with aesthetic values besides fetching the awards for Nazriya Nazim (best actress) and Lijo Paul (editing). “I was part of the crew of his debut filmMalavarvadi Arts Club. Om Shanthi…would not have been possible if he had not agreed to appear in what was a heroine-oriented film.”

Time has proved that Nivin’s decision to do that film was right. In fact, it is his uncanny knack to pick the winners that has made him the hottest star in Malayalam cinema today. If 2014 was great for him, 2015 is turning out to be even greater, with blockbusters such as Oru Vadakkan Selfie and Premam.

And the State award could not have been timed any better.
